Let Them Roar: The Los Anegles Zoo’s Roaring Nights

F23C8046

Lions, tigers, bears, oh my – and music too. That’s the Los Angeles Zoo’s Roaring Nights summer music series.

F23C8042

At the second of four evening events for ages 18 and up, it was country music that had a friendly, lively crowd dancing. Performers covered the best in country hits, and line dancing lessons were also on tap. Bands included Highway Starr, Grant Langston and the Supermodels, Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band, and South Bay Country.

F23C8010

Even the elephants were having a good time. The Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band (above) was within range of those elephant ears, and we saw one elephant swaying pleasureably.

F23C7979

The reptile exhibits at the zoo were open and fascinating, from frogs to snakes to lizards, it was great to see some of these jewel-colored creatures up close and personal without the daytime crowds.

F23C7975

F23C7988 F23C7984

Fish and sea turtles were on display too.

F23C7860

Some of these creatures are descended from dinosaurs…which leads us to the wonderfully realistic, life-size, Dinosaurs: Unextinct at the L.A. Zoo. With evening lighting adding to the dramatic appeal, these animatronic wonders made an exciting evening stroll.

F23C7922

And it wasn’t all just fun and games, we learned some dinosaur facts, too – for example, some were feathered (above).

Hatchlings above, what could be Survivor Dinosaur Island, below.

Above, the gentle Edmontonia.

F23C7885

Above, guests were treated to a surprising water spray greeting by the Dilophosaurus.

F23C7880 F23C7875

Citipati above, looks a bit like an ostrich.

F23C7867 F23C7865 F23C7862

Not your ordinary T-Rex standing stationary, here, the carnivores were slashing at the plant-eaters, viewers were treated to a startling spray of water from the mouths of some of these amazing creatures, baby dinos were hatching, and a fossil “dig” allowed participants to comb the sand and discover fossils just like the scientists do (below).

F23C7903

What a pleasure to tour that exhibit and wander the entire zoo at dusk and once the sun was fully down – with our LA heatwave, the zoo’s cool temps were just as inviting as the cool program itself.

F23C7851

F23C7926

But wait, there was more, a painting station that provided the materials needed to create images of participants’ favorite animals…

F23C7931 F23C7928

a game area with board games, pop-up zookeeper talks, and plenty of well-placed food trucks and full service bars.  Grilled Cheese Truck? Rice Balls of Fire?

The exotic pleasure of hearing animals stirring, calling, and yes, roaring; the magical dinosaur exhibition, the live music located throughout the zoo, the drinks and dining, the beautifully lit landscaping – Roaring Nights is hands down (and paws down, too) more fun than any dance club in town.

A live indie sound replaces Texas twang on Friday August 26th, when the zoo serves up another Roaring Night of fun with music from Black Crystal Wolf Kids, Well Hung Heart, FifthLaw and DJ Steve Prior. Go wild!

MidiCi: Neopolitan Pizza Captivates

F23C6301

F23C6450

F23C6303

Like Pokemon Go, you’ll want to catch, or in this case, eat, them all. MidiCi Neopolitan pizza is a beautifully designed elegantly casual pizza spot in Sherman Oaks, and it offers exceptional pizza, tasty salads, terrific desserts, plus wine, beer, and coffees – all served up Neopolitan style.

And just what does that mean?

F23C6366 Essentially, it means drool-worthy pizzas that are light, airy, and purely delicious.

F23C6383

The pizza is fresh and natural, made with non-GMO high quality ingredients including double zero flour imported from Naples, pure water, salt, and live yeast. The result: crisp, delicious, lightly chewy crust that’s never oily or gummy.  It’s healthy, too: with dough that has no sugar or oils and organic cheeses and produce, this pizza is a guilt-free delight.

F23C6258

Dough is created 24 hours before serving, prepared in a special room off the main kitchen, controlled by temperature and humidity.

F23C6414

Above, Pizza Al Parmigiano, no mozzarella here, just pure imported Parma cheese.

Pizza here takes just 90 seconds in ovens that are the nexus of attention in the restaurant’s open kitchen.

F23C6262

The ovens are made by Napoli’s Acunto family crafted from Vesuvian rocks found in the Sorentino region. Their methodology heats the stones to 1200 degrees. Careful, don’t touch!

So what comes out of those ovens? Pizza Pomodorini, is made with crushed organic Italian peeled tomatoes, fresh whole mozzarella, grape tomatoes, baby spinach, parmigiano-reggiano, fresh garlic, sweet organic basil, and non gmo organic extra virgin olive oil.

F23C6366

The classic Margherita is incredibly delicious, made with fresh whole buffalo mozzarella.

F23C6416

Above, the housemade fresh pesto pizza, made with fresh, organic basil. It’s incredible.

F23C6420

“We want to bring Neopolitan pizza to America,” MidiCi’s CEO Amit Kleinberger says, “we want to do what Starbucks did for coffee.”

F23C6456

“We think one of the magical things about MidiCi is that it appeals to all generations, millennials, couples, families, it has a pure and authentic appeal that everyone loves,” Kleinberger adds.  “It’s our mission to bring people together, make the world a better, more friendly place. It’s our belief that people coming together to enjoy themselves is the best thing that can happen,” Kleinberger says.

The Sherman Oaks outpost is just the start for Kleinberger, with 350 locations awarded all across the U.S., including plans for two more locations in Los Angeles.  And in each location, the restaurant plans a commitment to sustainable, organic ingredients.

F23C6289

“Wherever restaurants are located, we will find small, organic farms that provide fresh, clean, sustainable produce,” Chef Miele says.

Although pizza is the star attraction, there’s more to the menu including salads, antipasto, desserts, on-tap wines and beer, eclectic sodas and coffee.

The authenticity and freshness of the ingredients includes pesto made fresh in house, imported Parmesan aged 20 months, and classic Victoria Ardino coffee.

F23C6284

Sodas are served from Ferina machines, designed in Europe.

F23C6354

We had the wonderful Purple Kale salad, which combines incredibly sweet kale with baby spinach, medjool dates, and fresh lemon zest, and the wood-fire baked Truffle Cheese Bread to start.

F23C6361

The bread uses a black truffle cheese from Venice, which infuses truffles into the cheese, as well as fresh whole mozzarella, parmigiana-reggiano, and fresh, natural mushrooms.

F23C6351

Also wonderful: the simple and perfect Burata with Beets and Balsamic.

F23C6308

Dessert is equally memorable. A must-have is The Drowning Gelato, a simple and rich gourmet vanilla gelato drowning in espresso.

F23C6425

For a lighter option, try the fresh berries plate with just a drizzle of nutella and fresh pine nuts.

F23C6398

Or go for the gold: the Nutella Calzone is crisp and perfectly sweet, and is accompanied by fresh berries and banana.

F23C6390

F23C6436

The entire restaurant is beautifully welcoming, created by Sam Marshall, the architect behind LA-mainstay Republique. Note the bustling, magnetic open kitchen, the 50-year-old olive tree planted indoors, and the patio with glowing fire pits.

So what are you waiting for? Do what Kleinberger and Miele insist: eat, enjoy, be happy, celebrate! Neopolitan pizza is going to revolutionize the way you think about your favorite pie.

Heading West: West Inn & Suites in Carlsbad, California

West inn 2

Want a great and easy LA getaway for the 4th of July? Then head west. To West Inn & Suites in Carlsbad, Calif. A treat for families ready to visit Legoland or couples looking for a romantic getaway,  West Inn & Suites is just a quick stroll from the seasonal Flower Garden, featuring 50 acres of ranunculus with walking paths perfect for strolling; three blocks from the beautiful South Carlsbad beach, and a very short drive to The Museum of Making Music, a fascinating series of galleries packed with hands-on exhibits about musical instruments, and the art of making music itself.

But  West Inn & Suites also works as a self-contained stay, with a variety of packages from local micro-brewery tastings to a complete beach-going experience, including chairs and boogies boards. There’s also a fantastic fine-dining experience on-site, and luxury accommodations that are surprisingly reasonable.

Haven’t heard of West Inn & Suites? Well you should put it and the truly fantastic Bistro West restaurant, as well as their steak house, on your radar now.  In fact, the steak house was built first, with the family friendly inn and Bistro West following. Today, the stellar property is among the top selections for the area on Trip Adviser, and we concur that a top rating is more than justified.

We’ll start with the restaurant, an experience that rivals top gourmet restaurants in SoCal. Definitely not your ordinary hotel restaurant, this is a destination dining spot for the area, and truly a must for hotel guests.

F23C9172

According to manager Brandon Slattery, most of the fresh fruits and veggies on offer come from the West Inn & Suites’ own farm just up the street – from beets to heirloom tomatoes. “The concept of the restaurant is one that uses fresh farm to table ingredients that are switched out seasonally to take full advantage of the farm’s produce offerings,” Slattery says.

F23C9153

The restaurant includes a vast “wall of wine” that includes, Slattery says, “Over a thousand bottles and a specialty wine list.”

The restaurant is family-friendly, but elegant, too; stylishly appointed with features such as beautiful glass lamps, hand-blown in Italy.

F23C9150

The restaurant’s menu includes family favorites, but also offers delightful, creative adult cuisine.

F23C9157

We began our meal with letter-perfect craft cocktails, followed by a pescatarian feast.

F23C9160

Quickly flash-fried blue fin tuna was served with fermented black beans and West Farm’s fresh radishes. A wonderful starter, this is a unique and delicious dish that fits the close-to-the-sea location.

F23C9162

A beautiful beet salad, above, also features fresh-from-the-farm produce.

F23C9163

Above, a succulent sea bass with heirloom tomato, fresh artichoke hearts, and lemon orzo.

F23C9164

This dish, above, offers a rich profusion of flavor in mushroom ravioli with divers scallops. Flowers on both dishes are edible, and grown on the farm. The textures and flavors of mushrooms and scallops are a fresh combination that really works.

F23C9170

Above, an elegant quartet of dessert samplings: New York cheesecake, creme brulee, key lime pie, and a mud pie that’s definitely worthy of a full size portion.

“We keep our restaurant family friendly at an affordable budget and offer elegant cuisine options as well,” Slattery says.

It’s a rare combination to pull off, but the restaurant manages, with style. The hotel-owned, locally grown produce is an exceptional concept, bringing farm-to-table to an entirely new level. And the flavors and creativity on the menu are more than impressive.

The kitchen is helmed by renowned executive chef John Miller; we spoke with the restaurant’s second-in-command, Cody Carline. “Our menu features vastly different types of food from casual comfort items like pizza and pastas that are fresh and hearty, to high-end fine dining, and specialty wine and beer dinners. John pushes us to bring out special dishes for all our guests. ”

The restaurant is open for Sunday brunch as well as lunch and dinner.

Deliciously indulged? Then you’re just steps away from your room. We were impressed with the luxury linens, towels, and bedding; also with the ample space in our well-appointed suite. A small living area works perfectly to accommodate children or as a special place for entertaining and relaxing.

F23C9139 F23C9142

The pool and hot tub area are romantic at night, and are also a great spot to enjoy the hotel’s hosted full breakfast buffet in the morning. Waffles and eggs, fresh fruit, and sunshine – can’t beat that.

F23C9148

The hotel is also pet friendly, and perfect for private events from weddings to family reunions.

In short, when you’re looking for a place for a quick getaway or an extended stay, we can’t think of a better place to go than west, to West Inn & Suites.
