Granville Is the Updated Deli Food We Need in a Cool Space Now

The Granville Cafe in West Hollywood is a gorgeous space. It’s open, with an indoor/outdoor aesthetic, filled with sunshine and fresh air, yet blissfully covered from heat and rain. The small restaurant group has four other locations – Glendale, Burbank,  Studio City, and Pasadena.

The WeHo location is both glamorous and relaxed, with greenery, a patio, and, a sparkling bar area, and an indoor tree.

House-crafted food made with local and organic ingredients are the key notes here. It’s honestly exciting to get an updated, healthy take on both comfort soup and sandwich fare along with more innovative dishes – in a lovely setting.

In short, it’s an impressive modern-casual spot with style; meant for relaxing over an excellent coffee or cocktail, as well as ordering a full meal. We sampled a variety of dishes, and all were beautifully presented and crafted.

Granville stresses their use of hormone-free and antibiotic-free meats and fish, local and organic greens, artisan cheeses and breads, non-GMO veggies and oil, as well as sustainable and organic coffee and espresso. It’s all about quality food in ample portions that are well-presented, and fresh.

We started by sharing the smoked salmon spread and rye crisps. It was terrific, a creamy blend of dill, horseradish, cream cheese, and salmon of course. Honestly could be a meal in itself.

My companion had a crisp, plentiful salad with chicken, seasonal berries, gorgonzola, candied pecans, red onion, and a light but sweet caramel vinaigrette.

I opted for the rainbow trout, which was exceptional It’s pan-seared, with a nice, nutty-tasting pepita crust. On the side, I had the preserved lemon & butter pan sauce. It came with “a seasonal organic vegetable,” which for me was a lovely, fresh asparagus.

To drink, my companion had what she termed a “really nice, fresh iced tea.” I had the Granville Bloody Mary, crafted with a smooth Purus organic vodka, topped with celery stalk and olive garnish. The mix was tangy but not overwhelming, a good craft drink.

Dessert is both inventively presented and extremely good: not overwhelmingly sweet, fresh-tasting, and ample enough to share. We tried the Devil’s Advocate flourless chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting – gluten free; as well as the Berry Patch Shortcake with fresh berries, sweet cream, and silky almond buttermilk biscuits.

Last but not least, I had a beautifully prepared cappuccino, made with organic espresso.  

Traditional brunch fans will not be disappointed by the menu, either. We saw egg and toast dishes of all kinds.

Comfort food fans can feast on hearty dishes like the mac n’ cheese, below, with plenty of cheese. Recently sampled at the giving-back charitable event Masters of Taste, it’s delicious. Including veggies with the blissfully cheesey dish is an inspired idea that adds a healthful note of crispness without compromising comfort-food tradition.

And what would any deli-type menu be without matzoh ball soup? It’s a heady, fragrant mix served at Granville, considerably lower in sodium and so much fresher than many counterparts in town.

Elegant Indian Cuisine at Spice Affair

Romantic, delicious, and a truly desireable destination for diners appreciative of high-end Indian cuisine, that’s Spice Affair.

From elegant dining room to luxurious lounge and bar, with craft cocktails honestly among the very best in town, succulent cuisine, and charming service – it would be hard not to want to fall in love with the sexy Spice Affair in Beverly Hills on Restaurant Row – and its new location now added in Century City.

We were impressed with the lush golds and browns of the dining room and bar; the comfortable, spacious seating, and shimmering water sculptures from the moment we stepped inside. While Indian cuisine is everywhere in LA, it’s rare to find a combination of a simply gorgeous dining room and authentic, truly good food and drink.

We began our meal with two original and beautifully prepared drinks.

The Lavendar Basil Gimlit might’ve taken the prize: smooth, unique in taste and fragrance, it was just the cool passion to play off the spicier dishes.

A spicy concoction of mango and habanero infused vodka, cilantro, pineapple juice and infused bitters called Habanero Infusion was a perfect accompaniment to the starters, that included a variety of fresh, warm, light as air naan bread.

The Coco-Li-Flower was sweet but not cloying, crisp cauliflower in tangy coconut sauce, and a delightful vegan dish.

Shrimp cooked in mildly spicy peri-peri sauce was a treat. Not at all heavy-handed, the spicing did not overwhelm or overpower the fresh seafood.

Naan came in a variety of flavors, butter with olive, thyme; garlic and chives; plain.

One of the highlights for us was the fresh grilled sea bass. I do not think I have ever had sea bass that was so melt-in-your-mouth tender; the tandoor taste and yogurt marinade were letter-perfect. It’s a must-try. I’m not a meat-eater, but my partner also had Ghee Roast Lamb, and pronounced it equally tender and sweet.

Love at first bite – above, the Nadru Kofta, described on the menu as magical, and I will not disagree. Vegan all the way, this dish combined lotus root and walnut dumplings in a rich sauce; it’s entirely unique, and like many of the dishes here, fragrant in aroma and taste. spice 10

And of course one must save room for dessert, an in-house Gulabo, rose petal flavored homemade ice cream that danced with light, creamy flavor.

Rooms are fresh and modern; family style “apartments” with two bedrooms, a fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, and porch or patio luxuriously large; the perfect retreat to rest awhile. The latter are positioned around a pool and hot tub, one of several on the property, and a great place to indulge in a dip while stargazing.

Don’t miss the spiral labyrinth on property; and as tempting as it is to dine, doze, and take in all that scenery, be sure to attend classes. Take a dive into an exuberant Zumba class, experience a body-aligning Chiball stretch, or find serenity in a guided meditation.

A true don’t-miss is outdoor yoga in nearby Snow Canyon – a state park that is also well worth a day’s exploration in its own right, from layers of Navajo sandstone, lava tubes, fossil finds, and petrified dunes.

General manager Tracy Welsh has been with the resort for 18 years, ten of them as GM. “The challenge for us is to have something different every day for our guests and flow nimbly with whatever fits best.” The fact that the resort is an independence property allows her to remain fluid and offer so many different experiences at the resort. “Our location, adjacent to Zion National Park and a state park, you just feel a sense of calm here. It’s easy to let yourself feel that,” she relates. The property itself encompases 55 acres of undisturbed open space. “The nickname for the area is ‘color country,'” Welsh says, “and just looking at the area, the colors as they change day to day, it’s a constant reminder that life is ever changing, as is earth itself.”

“We want to be more about self-care than anything else. Indulge a little, relax, enjoy a hike and a massage. We’re all hitting it too hard, we do all of our work at hyper speed and the level of expectation is high, the pressure is always on. We try to relieve that here.”

Morning hikes originating at the resort are available at three different levels from entry level Explorer hikes to challenging Endurance hikes. Along the way, guests can explore the regions flora, fauna, and a petroglyph or two; or simply take in the beauty of the region and the thoughtfulness the resort uses in preserving it.

Return from any excursion to a beautifully prepared meal in the resort’s dining room. The food is absolutely gourmet-class; no boring “health food” fare here, although the choices are undoubtedly healthy. There’s carrot peanut butter as well as dairy buttter; farm fresh eggs or an exceptional tofu scramble for breakfast.

Dinner, fully served, offers selections like pan roasted sea bass and polenta lasagna; delightful salads; organic produce, and all created in a satisfying and innovative style. Delicious wine-based cocktails and an extensive wine and beer list add to a menu that also includes a changing confection of desserts – yes, there is chocolate.

While the average stay is four nights, some stay for a full week, others just visit for a weekend – only to return, again, and again for more natural beauty and relaxation.

Don’t miss a visit to the spa, where an expansive mountain view spreads out before soft loungers in the reception area, and nature-focused treatments such as a hydrating Agave Ritual massage and scrub, or a Warm Detox Wrap awaits. Try a Warm Himalayan Salt Stone massage or the Zen experience of crystal bowl Vibration Sound Therapy. Sound baths are especially popular.

“35% of our guests are here for a solo experience,” Welsh reports. “So we try to offer a welcoming, safe, and casual environment that has a real lack of pretension.”

Zion National Park is popular indeed, but despite shuttle busses around the valley floor and a robust tourist popular year-round, there are many beautiful spots to visit where you can experience blissful nature, breathe deep, and take in towering views and memorable vistas. Here are tall cliffs and dazzling canyons, viewed perhaps most expansively from just outside the valley floor at the Canyon Overlook Trail in the upper East Canyon.

Peer in the slot canyons below,  or pause along the admittedly narrow path for a break in a small cavern. At the termination of the one mile, mostly flat hike (warning: it will take an hour both to appreciate the view and approach narrow bends with caution), you’ll be rewarded with a broad and stunning view.

Don’t miss the exceptionally easy 1/4 mile path to Weeping Rock in the heart of the park; in the winter, icicles drip from the red rocks, while come spring and summer, flowers and mosses fill the crevices wet from natural springs with fecundity.

Stroll along the Virgin River to the Narrows, where canyon walls tower overhead; when it’s warm enough, wade with other park visitors into the rivers midst, and feel a part of the flow.  In the winter, enjoy deer nibbling on patches of greenery, and let the afternoon sunshine warm your face while you stroll.

After a full day of hiking and exploring, the place to stop is in Springdale, just outside the park’s main gates. The Desert Pearl Inn is a real gem, with sleek, modern rooms that feature hardwood floors, porches or balconies, and a setting that offers views of a bubbling stream or the beautiful cliffs of Zion. Enjoy Native American art and regional flora on the walls; a shiny kitchenette makes the perfect spot to have breakfast before visiting the park or an evening cocktail.

Enjoy the stunning work of local artist Richard Harding on the walls along with dining on fare such as rich Brie quesadillas, stuffed jalapenos, and a polenta stack with wonderfully fresh shrimp. The drinks are fantastic: spicy jalapeno margarita or prickly pear? It’s a difficult choice to make, and most of the ample craft cocktails are crafted with fresh fruit.

A more casual option is the brilliant gourmet selection at a small, warm cafe in an unlikely location: a former gas station. The Whiptail Grill now adjoins a gift shop; a large patio with great park views has taken the place of the gas pumps.

The Park Less Traveled

It’s only a few hours drive to  Capitol Reef National Park, one of the least visited in the state, with some relatively deserted trails even in summer. Mild temps year round, brightly hued sandstone cliffs, sunset views, and yes, even an in-park orchard and bakery, make this beautiful place the perfect spot to “wash up” on the reef.

You’ll want to visit the arch at Hickman Bridge and make a stop for an evening view when vivid colors paint sky and rock in a rainbow of shadows at Sunset point. You’ll also want to include a stop in at the orchard shop in Fruita, an historic farming area within the park; settle down on a picnic bench and enjoy a freshly picked peach or apple pie.

The Grand Wash is long at 6 miles, but flat and easy; take in the incredible, shifting views; make a side forray to the more strenuous but rewarding Water Tanks – natural formations worn into the stone.

At such a remote location, the food is an incredible surprise, with elegant desserts that literally resemble artwork; creative salads such as the watermelon, Feta, and arugula; pumpkin seed encrusted trout; a gorgeous and rich lobster mac n’ cheese, or the roasted butternut squash risotto. The cocktails are exceptional, too. The food is so unique and the setting so welcoming, you may come back more than once to experience it.

We stayed at the friendly,  Western-appointed Broken Spur Inn. The large and comfortable room included delightful features such as spur-shaped towel racks and pillows inviting us to “kick off your boots and stay awhile.” A small sitting area makes the room even more inviting; while outside expansive views look toward the park’s Panorama Point.

An indoor pool, laundry facility, and an on-property steakhouse with salads, pasta, a truly fine fresh salmon, and yes, of course, plenty of well cut steaks, adds to the convenience and pleasure of a stay here.  There’s cobblers and brownie sundaes, too.

Feasting on Fish: Awesome Entrees at Killer Shrimp

With a gorgeous harbor view, spacious seating on the patio, comfortable inside booths, and seafood entrees that live up to the name “killer,” Marina Del Rey’s Killer Shrimp is a delight.

We started with a crisp SLO Brew IPA and a classic cocktail, Pieces of Eight. A revamp of a classic Tiki drink from the 60s that originated in MDR, the flavor-rich mix of housemade passion fruit syrup, fresh pineapple and lime, and Cruzan rum was served in a super fun Tiki glass and garnished with a pineapple leaf.

Appetizers made a perfect start for our meal. The shrimp cocktail was more than ample to share, with tail-on large shrimp ringing the serving and a mix of the same fresh and delicious shrimp chopped with cucumber heaped inside the bowl. The sauce was zesty without being spicy or overwhelming the flavor of the shrimp.

We also tried the Ahi Tuna Poke Tacos. Again, the freshness of the poke was terrific, and the crisp, puffy, house-made taco shells nicely contrasted with the silky fish. The tacos were topped with a creamy avocado mousse in an artful presentation.

As entrees, we enjoyed two very different selections. The Killer Paella was a rich and satisfying dish with a hint of the exotic. Saffron rice,  andouille sausage, chicken, clams, mussels, calamari, and shrimp were bathed in a spicy flavor that accentuated the more delicate saffron. The Blackened Salmon Filet was tender and moist, an ample filet crisp with seasoning that enhanced but did not overwhelm the fish. The filet was centered over a puree of maple-scented brown butter sweet potatoes and wilted spinach that made a pretty magical combination.

The menu also features sandwiches and bowls – the lobster roll served at the next table looked pretty wonderful. Meat dishes such a filet mignon, and pasta choices like lobster ravioli, rounded out a menu that was full of pescatarian choices that encouraged us to plan a return for a taste – perhaps jumbo coconut crusted shrimp or the Fisherman’s Stew in a spiced tomato sauce.

And naturally, the restaurant’s signature peel n’ eat shrimp is available in a zesty, spicy simmer in a variety of permutations that include the original, a shelled choice, with pasta, and a mix of shrimp, lobster, and crab with sweet corn.

A variety of tasty sides also are offered, from a “loaded” baked potato to fries, broccoli, and asparagus.

Desserts – which we were too full to sample – include a sweet potato pecan pie and a Guiness Chocolate Bread Pudding, as well as giant, warm, fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies or brownies.

And for those of you hankering for delicious fish 24/7, the adjoining Killer Shrimp Cafe can provide just that, and is even open on Christmas.

In short: Killer Shrimp isn’t all about spicy shrimp, although that’s pretty terrific, too. It’s about beautiful seafood served with a “killer” marina view, friendly and knowledgeable service, and best of all – a wide variety of entrees with choices sure to please any palette. Keep it casual or make it elegant, seafood here is quite a “catch.”
